F. Scott Fitzgerald

  • Fitzgerald wrote several novels, the most famous of which is probably The Great Gatsby.
  • His short stories were published in magazines as early as 1916, but he didn’t become truly popular until 1920.
  • Some of his stories are a bit quirky– in “The Diamond as Big as the Ritz” there really is a diamond as big as the Ritz Hotel.  And “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” (recently made into a movie w/Brad Pitt) is about a man who ages backwards.
  • Most of his stories deal with society life in the 1920s: flirtations, parties, and people challenging (and developing new) social norms after WWI.
  • If anyone ever asks you, “Who was an author in the 1920s?” Fitzgerald is a good answer– he’s probably associated more with the Jazz Age than anyone else.  Although Ernest Hemingway would also work. (The two were friends, after all.)
